"I love the fact that we all have BIG PLANS in our life or small ones. While, God is okay with that, HE is going to determine HOW you get there."

Meet Alyssa Colon from Cincinnati Ohio. She is a freshman studying Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

How do you feel about being a woman on campus and does that affect your daily life?

Alyssa: I think it is nice at Lee because the majority of the population is girls and you feel like you have more support. Every once in a while, though, you would notice that like, if there is a large group of guys, they give you like a condescending stare and you can feel like they are talking about you. That is one of the main ways I feel it could affect your life, just like the little things. Overall, I feel like there is a good support system for women and girls. I have a lot of good female teachers that are good examples of what you should be, they are passionate about what they do. So, you feel like you have more support.

Do these kinds of things give you hope for the future considering everything going on in the world?

Alyssa: Women in general, Lee is doing a decent job. The one thing I would say is it's hopeful that we are doing some things right, but I feel like Women of color, I am Hispanic so, I kind of have a heart for that kind of thing. I feel like women of color are not represented or respected as they should be on campus. I have noticed a lot of girls who are of color, any girl whether they are Asian, African, African American, Hispanic, I have noticed that they feel kind of outcast or they act like more insecure than my white friends, which should not happen. We should all feel like a community, so there are little ways to go.

What women do you look up to in life or on campus?

Alyssa: I look up to my mum, she is the hardest working person I met. When I and my siblings were younger she also took as much time as possible to help raise us while working. On campus, Dr. Dirksen, she literally takes kids as her own and has the biggest compassion I have ever seen in a woman. I want to be LIKE THAT. No matter what a kid is going through, how they identify, where they are from, what’s going on in their life; she feels for them, she is empathetic and passionate. All the things you should be.

What’s your favorite Bible Verse/ Quote?

Alyssa: Proverbs 16:9, “In his heart, a man's plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” That has been my favorite since I was young. I love the fact that we all have BIG PLANS in our life or small ones. While, God is okay with that, HE is going to determine HOW you get there. It is kind of you and GOD working together, it’s not just HIS and yours. It coexists together.
